Root of Joy

The root of joy is gratefulness...It is not joy that makes us grateful; it is gratitude that makes us joyful.

-- Brother David Steindl-Rast

Joy is a deep, internal response to something...to something deeply good. Inherently, good. Good, in contrast to bad. Or, good, that prevails...that has been waited for, hoped for.

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

-- Romans 12:12

Angels we have heard on high
Sweetly singing o’er the plains,
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their joyous strains.

    Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
    Gloria, in excelsis Deo!

Shepherds, why this jubilee?
Why your joyous strains prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be
Which inspire your heav’nly song?
Come to Bethlehem and see
Christ Whose birth the angels sing;
Come, adore on bended knee,
Christ the Lord, the newborn King.
See Him in a manger laid,
Whom the choirs of angels praise;
Mary, Joseph, lend your aid,
While our hearts in love we raise.

-- "Angels We Have Heard On High"...I've enjoyed this version lately

Joy is connected to gratitude...for true goodness.
